One Fleet, Four Seasons: Pairing a Mini Excavator, Skid Steer and Mower on a Small Farm

Small farms and large properties rarely need big iron — they need the right three machines. After watching hundreds of customers run our equipment through full seasons, the pairing that keeps earning year-round is a 1.5-ton class excavator, a mid-size skid steer and a remote track mower. Here is the year, machine by machine.

The core three

  • Excavator — K15: trenching, drainage, stumps, foundations, pond work
  • Skid steer — K390: material moving, attachments, cleanup, loading
  • Remote mower — K550: slopes, orchard rows, brush, the ground nothing else can safely finish

Spring: drainage, planting and the first cuts

  • K15: clear and dig drainage ditches before the wet weeks; dig post holes for new fencing with the auger
  • K390: haul seed, feed and fencing material; grade the yard after the thaw with the box blade
  • K550: first orchard and slope cuts before growth gets ahead of you

Summer: irrigation and the mowing grind

  • K15: trench water lines and repair pond edges while the ground is workable
  • K390: run the pallet forks for feed deliveries and the auger for shade structures
  • K550: the workload peaks — slope banks, fence lines and terraces on rotation, roughly every two weeks

Fall: harvest support and ground prep

  • K390: bulk handling — grain, firewood, mulch — with pallet forks and bucket
  • K15: dig and trench before the ground hardens; stump work after harvest
  • K550: final cuts and leaf/brush cleanup on the slopes

Winter: snow, projects and maintenance

  • K390: snow pushing with a blade, barn loading — the skid steer becomes the winter hero
  • K15: indoor demolition, greenhouse footings, any project you postponed since spring
  • K550 + others: scheduled service — filters, greasing, track tension, blade sharpening — so spring starts at full strength

Why this trio works economically

  1. No idle months: each machine leads at least one season
  2. Shared logistics: all three fit on one equipment trailer
  3. Shared engine philosophy: named-brand gasoline/diesel engines with regional parts support mean one parts drawer covers your fleet
  4. Attachment leverage: the skid steer's tool wall (forks, auger, blade, broom) extends the other two machines' work
